How To Turn Failure Into Motivation?

Failure can discourage even the strongest of people. There’s something insidious about failure that makes it extremely difficult to recover from. We lose sight of our hopes and dreams, our goals start to feel unattainable, and we question our capabilities.

One of the worst casualties of failing is that we sometimes lose our motivation to continue pursuing our goals. However, none of that has to happen. In fact failure can be a great tool on your path to achieving success! While setbacks can sometimes feel insurmountable that is exactly when you need to double down on your dreams and fight harder to achieve them.

Here are four ways to turn failure into motivation and then into success:

1. Understand that failing is a part of becoming successful

We oftentimes look at failure as the antithesis of success when that couldn’t be further from the truth.Failure is in fact an integral part of success. By failing you gain valuable information that will help you succeed in the future.

If you treat failure as a learning experience and understand that it is part of the process then you can begin to learn from your failures and improve upon yourself.  Remember that every failure puts you one step closer to succeeding.

Keep moving forward knowing that failure isn’t the end of the world it is simply one more step on the way to you accomplishing your goals and achieving your dreams.

“Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty, and persistence.” – Colin Powell

2. Be honest with yourself

If we are going to overcome our failures we have to be entirely honest with ourselves and only then can we begin to figure out how to go from failure to success. Assess the situation, where did you go wrong? Did you put in proper time and effort to achieve your goals? Did you do absolutely everything in your power to make your dream a reality?

If your answer to any of these questions is a resounding “no”, that’s okay because now you know why you came up short. Introspection is a powerful tool. Did you not give enough effort? Did you not work hard enough? Here’s your chance to change that. Use what you find in self-examination as motivation to do better. You’ll be amazed at what you achieve.

3. Swallow your pride

Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes from time to time. But if you are to succeed you have to be willing to admit to yourself when you mess up and you also have to be willing to learn from your mistakes. Want to know the one thing that will stop you from doing this? Your Ego.

I have met so many smart capable people who failed miserably because they could not admit that they were wrong.

Instead of adapting and evolving they stayed stuck in their ways and inevitably failed simply because they couldn’t swallow their pride. If there is one piece of advice I could share with people it is that you should never be too proud. Life has a way of humbling us very quickly. The sooner you let go of your ego and begin to learn from you mistakes the sooner you can start down the path to turning your dreams into reality and achieve your goals.

“Swallow a toad in the morning and you will encounter nothing more disgusting the rest of the day.” – Nicolas Chamfort

4. Remember how failure makes you feel

While it’s normal to fail, and it happens to the best of us, failure still leaves a bad taste in our mouth. No matter how important a step it is on the road to success no one feels good about failing. When we fail we experience so many different emotions: we feel hurt, angry, sad, dejected, and weak. Remember those feelings? Now use that memory as a source of motivation.

Tell yourself you never want to feel that again. If you find you are slacking one day, if you find you aren’t putting in full effort, think back to the times you failed. Think back to how failing made you feel and work ten times harder to ensure you don’t experience that again. If you’re ever in need of motivation reminding yourself how awful it feels to fail will be all the encouragement you need. Redouble your efforts and get back to it. You’ll be glad you did.
